Millions of Americans live without a credit score \u2014 a condition known as credit invisibility.<\/strong> In today\u2019s credit-driven world, being \u201ccredit invisible\u201d can make it difficult to qualify for loans, rent housing, or even secure certain jobs. If you\u2019ve ever checked your credit and discovered that you don\u2019t have a score<\/em>, you\u2019re not alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Minimum Requirements for a Credit Score<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

To generate a credit score, your credit report must meet specific minimum criteria \u2014 and these differ slightly depending on whether the lender uses FICO<\/strong> or VantageScore.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

FICO Score Requirements<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

  1. At least one active, undisputed tradeline<\/strong>
    A tradeline is any account reported to the credit bureaus \u2014 such as a credit card, auto loan, or line of credit. Accounts under dispute do not<\/strong> count.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. A tradeline that\u2019s at least six months old<\/strong>
    FICO requires six months of history to make a reliable prediction about your credit risk. Anything newer won\u2019t produce a score.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. Recent activity within the past six months<\/strong>
    Your credit report must show at least one tradeline that\u2019s been updated in the last six months (such as a payment, balance update, or statement).<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  4. You cannot be reported as deceased<\/strong>
    Errors that list consumers as \u201cdeceased\u201d prevent a FICO score from being generated.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    If these criteria aren\u2019t met, your file is considered \u201cunscorable.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
